Cross Timbers Hiking Trail – Lake Texoma

Cross Timbers Hiking Trail is a great trail on the South side of Lake Texoma.  It’s a perfect distance for a day trip from Dallas Fort Worth or Oklahoma City, OK.  The drive up to the trail from Dallas is pretty flat most of the way as you pass through several small towns along 377.  As you get closer to Lake Texoma the hills begin to form making for a nice country drive all the way to the trail.

We parked at the Cedar Bayou Marina, and started heading West.  Cedar Bayou Marina charges a $5 parking fee to park at their Marina.  The trail is about 14 miles of out and back with several primitive camp spots along the way.  We decided our goal was to make it to the Eagle Roost camping spot which is about 3.5 miles out, making for a total of 7 miles for the day.

There are several points along the trail where you can walk out on a cliff edge or huge boulders right on the edge of Lake Texoma.  As you can see from the picture above the water was very low while we were out.  It appeared to be about 10 feet below where the water typically would have been.

The best view of the section of trail we did was the Eagles Roost Camping spot.  The cliff there is about 40 feet high, and you have a great view from Texas across Lake Texoma into Oklahoma.

Steep Hike

The trail has some steep parts that will get your heart rate up.  I would recommend this trail for most skill levels, but there are some sections that are a real leg burner.

The trail is very easy to follow, and very well marked.  The further out you get the trail the more primitive the trail gets due to less foot traffic.

Eagle’s Nest is the best camp site on the Cross Timbers Trail. It has great views across Lake Texoma, and we highly recommend making the hike to camp out at Eagle’s Nest.

I will definitely return to this trail to do some mountain biking.  The first couple of miles heading west from Cedar Bayou Marina would make for some really awesome mountain biking.  However, there are several sections of trail that would be unridable on a mountain bike that you would have to carry your bike over.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am about to leave tomorrow and go into Arkansas for a few days and wanted to hit something up in OK on the way back. I will definitely check this out.

The Wichitas are a too far out of the way for a trip to Arkansas. Robbers Cave is fairly nice, with some decent trails and not too far out of the way. The Talimena area is OK but I was a bit underwhelmed. The Ozarks are fantastic with some great hiking. The Wichitas are still the best, for my money though, and a whole lot closer to Dallas too.
